These teapots are both Rockingham ware. One is considerably larger than the other, and each features a slightly different shade of brown glaze. The varying shades of the brown glaze of the Rockingham ware are directly related to the intensity of the manganese glaze applied over the yellow ware body. The imagery on the bodies of these teapots represents the biblical story of Rebecca at the well. This theme was popular, and spoke to the woman’s role in keeping hearth and home. James Bennett is attributed with the design of the Rockingham teapot, and was the first potter to seek commercial gain beyond the East Liverpool, Ohio area.
Each teapot is in very good original condition with minor losses sound the inner rims, consistent with age and use.
