Antique 19th century Staffordshire porcelain flatback figurine depicting the Biblical figure Samson prying open the jaws of a lion. Dressed in a floral Scotsman's kilt and striped arisaid or cloak. One of the finest examples of this figurine. Circa mid 19th century.
According to Pugh - considered the bible for Staffordshire figure collectors - this figure is Samson from the bible in the act of opening a lion’s jaw with both hands. However, there is much controversy surrounding his identity as others have called him Van Amburgh, Hercules and Crockett.
