Item description:
ceramic vase, clay worked on a potter's wheel, glazed with thick, compact majolica glazes, finished in pure gold and decorated by hand with an airbrush, and finally glazed in a second firing at 1300-1400 degrees. Signed "pucci umbertide made in italy" and catalog number "81," made by the famous ceramist domenico pucci. the vase can be dated to around the mid-1900s, between 1950 and 1960. The object on offer is of the highest artistic quality, with compact, extremely smooth and regular glazing, so much so that the vase appears to be made of porcelain. The most distinctive feature of this vase are the two beautiful white bands embellished with numerous multicolored flowers, all created with an airbrush, which stand out from the main body of the vase, colored in the classic, beautiful orange characteristic of the rometti and later pucci factories.
useful information for evaluating the item:
a quick search on the web shows that vases very similar to ours are offered for sale at prices ranging from a minimum of €400-500 to around €800-900. There are also vases that fetch as much as €2,000-2,500, as well as some that sell for €150-200. The former are very beautiful, while the latter are particularly simple and common.
information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
the ceramiche pucci company was founded by engineer domenico pucci in 1947 in umbertide, in the province of perugia, was born out of the much more famous umbertide ceramics factory "rometti," taken over by pucci himself in 1943, from which, at the end of world war ii, some ceramists left to form the workforce of the new factory. During these years, dante baldelli continued to collaborate with the factory, still called "pucci già rometti" and located in via spalato in umbertide. The factory, which since 1952 has been located in the new premises in via a. Costa 3 in umbertide, although technically excellent, it was characterized by a detached modernism and often drew inspiration from rometti's production, but without its strong artistic influence, especially in the years before world war ii. In 1952, 1954, '55, '56, and '57, the company presented its products at the milan trade fair and, in the same years, it was also present at the levante fairs in bari and those in toronto, canada, casablanca, morocco, and barcelona, spain. In 1958, for financial reasons, the factory took the name "maioliche pucci" and added to its normal production a line of wall tiles and artist's monotypes created, among others, by the owner's youngest daughter edvige pucci, mariano beccafichi, his nephew giovanni, edda savini, betto guardabassi, alessandro starnini, and bruno orfei, as well as an anonymous decorator of great skill known by the pseudonym signorina di gubbio. In 1960, due to severe economic difficulties, pucci was forced to slow down mass production and focus on artistic ceramics, studying new forms and new decorative styles. In 1962, unable to obtain sufficient market share, the company closed its doors for good.
