An original watercolor on paper painting by Gabriele Mariano Nicolai Carelli (Gabriel Carelli), Italian artist 1820-1900, "Vecchia di Amalfi" (old … Read more An original watercolor on paper painting by Gabriele Mariano Nicolai Carelli (Gabriel Carelli), Italian artist 1820-1900, "Vecchia di Amalfi" (old town of Amalfi), scene of a fisherman sitting on a rock in front of two baskets looking across the bay at the old town, sail boats to the right and left in the harbor, signed Gabriele Carelli in the lower left corner front, old picture frame backing inscribed: Vecchia di Amalfi, 7 1/4" x 12", undated but probably executed in the 1880's. CA number 3959, CA purchased late summer 2024 from a north of England auction house.
The painting has been surface cleaned, matted with White Museum matboard, gold line, Museum Glass and backing, framed in the original 22kt gold frame.
Carelli was born in Naples, studied at "scuela di Posilippo". He was the son of Raffaele Carelli (painter), brothers Consalvo and Achille (painters) and father to Conrad H.R. Carelli (painter). He moved to England in 1866 and exhibited works at the Dudley Gallery and the Royal Academy (London), the Walker Art Gallery (Liverpool) and the Manchester City Art Gallery; also in Italy. Carelli's work may be found in the Royal Collection.
Later in life he and his family wintered in Menton, French Riviera. See less
