Original engraving of Virginia by Jedidiah Morse for his New American Universal Geography. Map was engraved by Samuel Hill and published by Thomas & Andrews, Boston, 1796. The map features topographical features of Virginia, along with naming its major towns, including Shepherdstown and Winchester.
Jedidiah Morse (1761 – 1826) was a famed geographer and considered the “Father of American Geography”. His geographical writings and research dominated the field in the United States geography for over 20 years.
