Interesting antique paper mache element fabricated in the Italian (cartapesta) or French (papier-mâché) tradition. Thought to be a finial for an architectural wall standard or processional standard for feast day parades. Intricately detailed surface on a hollow body; wooden stick and floral form escutcheon at the base where the pole would have been attached. Artisan made; no maker's mark.
Dimensions: overall, 6.5"W x 4"D x 21.5"H; rosette at base 4" Dia.
Very good as-found condition; original paint has worn away with time and use.
