Crafted in … Read more Decorate a shelf, buffet, or kitchen counter with this elegant antique faience “Aiguière” from Rouen, France, circa 1960. Crafted in the traditional Norman style, the sculptural ceramic ewer stands on a circular pedestal base and features a gracefully curved silhouette with a tall flared neck, pronounced pouring spout, and large scrolling handle accented with blue and yellow trim.
The body is richly hand painted on both sides with intricate floral and foliate motifs surrounding a central medallion decorated with a colorful flower basket composition in the classic Rouen manner. Additional floral decoration encircles the neck and base, while vibrant tones of cobalt blue, yellow, orange, and green contrast beautifully against the creamy white faience ground. The decorative jug is further embellished with fine dotted details and scrolling borders throughout, showcasing the meticulous craftsmanship associated with Rouen pottery.
The antique faience pitcher is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use and retains vivid hand-painted colors throughout. Marked “Rouen” on the underside for further authentication, this charming decorative vessel would make a beautiful addition to a French faience or Normandy pottery collection.
