In Qing Dynasty homes most people sat on stools or chairs, while benches were often found in public theaters or temples. This 150-year-old bench was carved out of walnut in the Shanxi region of China, and has uniquely carved spandrels. In ancient China benches were low to the ground but European influence made higher designs fashionable, which makes this bench ideal for a standard dining room table.
