Comes from a rare art folio published by Albert Skira in the 1940s, in Geneva, Switzerland. Printed on one side. Numbered in the lower right corner: 4. Excellent condition - minor edge wear, never framed. Only one copy is available. We are showing two to save the listing for future.

This is an outstanding example of Cezanne's aesthetic procedure. The sight of these trees same an immediate impact on his sensibility, yet, what impressed him was less the trees themselves than the massive vertical rhythms - an uprush from the soil of colored volumes that fan out into leaves and branches. Here we have no conventional or romantic landscape, painted to an eye to decorative effects subjected to the rules of prospective. Cezanne's aim was to externalize his sensation of the vital urge of nature at its most grandiose, and, by grace of his instinctive sense of harmony, he has rendered it with aptly disciplined emotion. There is here no crudity of color, nor any facile thickening of the impasto; instead of these, he employs those delicate blue-green tones and the light, translucent brushstrokes which were his happy secret.
