Large Japanese cedar Tarozake barrel originally used for the infusion of cedar flavor into either sake or rice whiskey. Tarozake is a type of sake famous for its cedar flavor infused from barrels made from Japanese cedar (Yoshino Sugi). It is highly coveted as a luxury item, few companies today still make their sake/whiskey the traditional way of using a cedar barrel to obtain the strong flavor. Japanese cedar was chosen for food/drink production over other choices due to the beneficial bacteria that live in the barrels over time. This same quality is what makes cedar chests so useful against moths and pests while storing fabrics. It's natural aroma acts as an efficient form of bug repellant all while giving off a pleasant, non-toxic smell. This antique barrel has not been used to hold liquid in quite sometime, as a result it has dried out, breaking the seal and making it useless when it comes to infusing alcohol. But since cedar is resilient and known for withstanding harsh environments and time, it's still a perfect item for storing those winter quilts all while being a unique statement piece in whatever room its in.
We have not been able to successfully translate the red characters carved onto the sides and lid of the barrel.

It is structurally very sound, there are scratching and marks all along the body of the barrel from it's time in use. They add to the antique mysterious element that comes from owning something a century old. The bamboo siding along the bottom has a loose piece, it is not falling of, it just tends to stick out a little. Could be glued back down if needed. less
