This mola has a beautiful, fantasy abstract design of Amano (frogs) using vibrant orange, yellow and black fabrics.
Molas are hand-sewn by indigenous Guna formerly known as Kuna artisans in Panama. This mola was purchased in Panama in the late 1990s. Molas have many uses. They can be framed as art for wall hangings, made into pillows, bedspreads, place mats, or used as fabric for quilting projects.
The process is called "reverse appliqué"...a very complex and tedious way of working fabric. Several layers of different colored cottons are stacked on top of each other and the design is skillfully cut through the top layer to the color that is desired for the design. The top layer is delicately rolled back and attached in tiny stitches that expose the second color.
Every mola is a one-of-a-kind treasure.
