A wonderfully timeworn piece of late-19th-century English ironstone by F. J. Emery of Burslem, Staffordshire.
Made circa 1891–1894, this rectangular serving dish is decorated in Emery’s Versailles pattern, with delicate blue transferwork of scrolling foliage, flowers and fruit drifting across an antique-white ground. A softly scalloped molded rim gives the substantial ironstone form an unexpectedly graceful finish.
More than 130 years of age have given the surface considerable character. Fine crazing runs throughout the glaze, accompanied by subtle staining and tonal variation that soften the original white into the warm, layered color associated with well-aged English ironstone.
The underside retains the F. J. Emery England maker’s mark. Emery marks incorporating the word “England” are documented to circa 1891–1894.
Beautiful displayed on open shelving or a hutch, layered into a blue-and-white collection, or simply placed on a table as an architectural decorative object. Its restrained palette also makes it particularly easy to mix with both traditional English pieces and more relaxed contemporary interiors.
In very good antique condition. Extensive age-related crazing and areas of light staining/discoloration are visible throughout. Two small rough areas along the rim appear consistent with manufacture or age. These characteristics are part of the piece’s antique surface and are shown in the photographs.
