Early 19th Century Country French Armoire from Lorraine in Stripped Oak represents a remarkably early example of abstract art rendered … Read more Early 19th Century Country French Armoire from Lorraine in Stripped Oak represents a remarkably early example of abstract art rendered by a rural artisan far removed from the centers of furniture craftsmanship at the time, located in Paris, Lyon and Bordeaux. From a distance the piece looks like most typical armoires of the period, but as one approaches one notices the highly unusual, stylized and artistically transcendent motifs carved into the four principal door panels. The bonnet and framework around the panels remains typically Country French, celebrating wildflowers and foliage for which the environs are so noted. The structure is classic French, with pegged mortise & tenon joinery, triple recessed panels on each side, scrolled apron and feet, and big steel barrel hinges supporting each door. Complementary finely figured steel key guards, or ferrures, round out the embellishment. Doors open wide thanks to the placement of the aforementioned hinges, revealing a cavernous interior which one can use for any number of functions, including hiding a big flat panel TV! Painstakingly stripped using our proprietary process that retains the patina and sheer natural beauty of the old wood, all performed by our expert in-house staff.
