Antique lithograph of Matinée de Septembre (September Morn) (1912) by Paul Emile Chabas. The original painting became a "succès de scandale" in the United States in May, 1913, when Anthony Comstock, secretary of the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice, protested against the painting as supposedly immoral. There was much publicity, and reproductions of the painting sold well for years afterwards.
This lithograph reproduction of a portion of the painting is in its original carved wood frame and still bears the backing tape from “S.S. Lowry & Co. Phonograph and Art Store” Berwick, Pennsylvania.
Based on the few records related to the store of origin, this appears to be from the 1920s when phonographs exploded in popularity.
