A real collector's find is this hand painted 3-tiered serving tray by the Weil Ware Pottery Company of California sometime between 1941 - 1950. Each of the 3 dishes bares the authentic makers mark that reads: "Hand Decorated, Weil Ware, followed by an image of the iconic burro stylized logo mark, then Made in California USA". The 3 triers are comprised of a dinner plate, a salad plate and a bread & butter plate. Each of them has a jadeite green face with sunburned yellow roses, olive and forest green leaves and brown stems that are painted by hand. A silver toned metal looped handle that runs through each tier and is screw fastened one level to the next creates the cascading display effect. While this pattern called Green Rose is somewhat prolific in the marketplace., the tiered serving tray is extremely difficult to find and once discovered it is a collectors find.
California Figurine Company was ultimately reimagined as the Weil Ware Company in 1941. Pastel toned diner ware was the rage in the marketplace at this time and the Weil Company was a significant maker of the dinnerware and goods made of ceramic, stoneware and pottery goods that sat under the umbrella of what became known as the California Pottery movement. This style of homeware was made primarily in the kilns and studios of the Los Anglers region of Southern California with few exceptions. Hence the categorical name reference. Although SoCal had over 300 producers in the marketplace for the pottery market et al. there were a handful known as the Big Five. Among them were Vernon Kilns, J.A. Bauer Pottery, Metlox Potteries, Pacific Clay Products, and Gladding, McBean & Co.. The region became a serious rival to the UK companies that were producing the majority of clay-based goods almost exclusively until that time. There were many factors that were impetus for this new movement in homewares, namely the influences of the time which undoubtedly reference the Arts and Crafts movement, Great Depression, World War II era and the post-WWII. Although not as prolific as the five, Weil Ware was among the favorited companies in the scape that changed the niche in the marketplace. Fortunately, because of their limited production capacity the goods that have survived the test of time have become rare and the smaller companies like Weil are becoming increasingly more collectible. the three-tiered serving piece offered from Palm Springs Regency is among the more challenging to discover for collectors of this type of item.
