This striking piece originates from the southern Italian region of Puglia and is called a ‘trimmone’. The amphorae originally had a wood stopper wrapped in a piece of cloth to seal contents. The luminous ivory-coloured glaze on this amphora was common to local domestic pottery, especially with ceramics storing food, olive oil or wine. Called ‘robba bianca’ it represents the finest kind of ‘ceramica rustica’, and is produced with a pewter glaze and twice fired. Specific to the Grottaglie tradition of ceramics, this historical piece has a lot of character, with its unique form and magical patina. It also features a mustard 'drip' on one side - most likely from another pot in the kiln during the firing process, rendering it a one of a kind piece. This antique amphora has seen over 150 years of service to its family, and naturally shows some charming signs of age. This handmade example would make the perfect decorative centrepiece adding some farmhouse charm to any home or space, especially when pared with the matching pieces as seen in the images. See less
