These cylindrical ceramics were used for storing food, in which vegetables were conserved in oil and vinegar, or anchovies and sardines in salt. The light pottery known as ‘robba bianca’ represents the finest kind of ‘ceramica rustica’, produced with a pewter glaze and twice fired, and is the most expensive of this rural ceramic. This type of ‘vasettu’ was commonly produced in Grottaglie, a town in Puglia known for its age old ceramic craft, and is particularly rare due to its completely intact lid. Today it would be ideal for storage or as a decorative display piece. Also available is a smaller matching pot with lid to add impact on a table or kitchen ledge, as seen in the images. See less
