“Tulpan/Tulip/” rya rug by Katri Warén-Varis for Neovius, Finland/Sweden, 1935.
Hand knotted in wool by the then young, but later prolific designer and weaver Anna-Greta Sjöqvist, signed AGS. Original design by Katri Warén-Varis (1891-1973) for Nevovius. The piece is defined by a dense and richly textured pile characteristic of early Nordic rya production. The composition is articulated through a stylized floral arrangement, where saturated red tones and warm yellow nuances are set against softer cream elements, giving the surface both clarity and warmth.
Unlike later, more purely decorative rya rugs, this example carries a distinctly composed and identifiable design language, reflecting the relationship between traditional textile art and early modern Nordic interior design. Variations in pile height and density lend the surface depth and a pronounced tactile quality, while the colour transitions remain softly integrated within the overall composition.
Measuring 176 × 130 cm, with an approximate thickness of 1.5 cm, the rug has balanced proportions and a format that works equally well as a floor piece or as a wall-mounted textile.
The underside reveals the hand-worked structure, and the piece remains in very good vintage condition, showing only minor wear consistent with age and use. Maker’s mark present.
A highly characteristic and historically grounded example of Finnish rya design from the 1930s, combining decorative richness with a clearly authored composition. This piece has an attribution mark,
