About the Designer: The founder was born in California on Dec. 22, 1888. Foss studied at the Mark Hopkins Art Institute in 1904-05 while living in Alameda, California. He died there on March 20, 1970. The company he started back in the depression era, 1927-28, LRF, Inc. he founded with his wife Ruby Foss. In 1929, he introduced a very successful line of sheepskin lampshades to America. Ever since, they've been sharing the spotlight with a range of classic names in home furnishings, like Thomas Molesworth, Gustav Stickley, and Marcel Breuer. Indeed, the kind of timeless design and craftsmanship that comes out of LRF transcends generations of style. Marc Foss, third generation president, stated, "The key to this business is that we were never bought and sold. Businesses that change hands get watered down and tend to fail because the philosophy of the original owner has been forgotten. "
