It has been made from cast bronze, with a verdigris patina. It features the face of Dionysos, the god of the grape-harvest, wine making, orchards and fruit, vegetation, fertility, insanity, ritual madness, religious ecstasy, festivity and theatre in ancient Greek religion and myth. He is also known as Bacchus, the name adopted by the Romans. He is depicted with a large smile, a beard and a wreath of grapes like the Comedy mask in the ancient Greek theater. There is hanging chain on the reverse side. There is no visible maker's mark. See less
