En grisaille painting on card by British artist Martin Theodore Ward (United Kingdom, 1799-1874). Ward was well known as a sporting artist painting horses and dogs. This image is probably his interpretation of a then-well-known scene from literature. In it, a satanic or devil character drags a female while a fairy flies away from the scene, all suspended over a dreaming or dying man.
Watercolor, ink, ink wash and body colour on a heavy cardstock. Signed lower right, with his name and active dated written on the back.
