Pair of albarelos, Old Strasburg Luneville Porcelain, 19th century. XX – France
Exquisite pair of albarelos made of Luneville porcelain, mid-20th century. Albarelos were porcelain jars that were traditionally used by apothecaries to store medical liquids. However, in addition to their functional use, they were decorated with paintings and with the names of the substances they contained, in this case “U Auréum” and “U Rosatum”. Elongated in shape, they have a whitish background where the hand-painted floral motif ornaments stand out, with magenta and pink, yellow, purple and green predominating. The protagonist is the Luxembourg rose accompanied by small yellow and mauve flowers, and entangled with volutes following the baroque spirit. On the back, a smaller rose.
The Luneville porcelain factory was founded in 1730 by Jacques Chambrette in the town of the same name, in the Lorraine region. Throughout the 18th century it gained a reputation for the high quality and beauty of its products, competing with other important factories of the time such as Sèvres. During the 19th century, the factory prospered under the management of Keller and Guérin, who extended the range of products and perfected production techniques. One of Luneville's most recognized styles is "Old Strasbourg", known for its elaborate and colorful floral motifs, inspired by nature and hand-painted. This style is famous for its rustic and detailed charm.
