A Ruth Dian Pumphrey (American 1942 - 2019) abstract ceramic sculpture circa 1980's. It is signed on the bottom. This towering untitled sculpture is heavy, with a gorgeous deep brown color. The few spots of different color variations are from its original making and enhance the character of the hand made piece.
Pumphrey was born in born in Portland, Oregon on June 29, 1942. She was a journalist by trade, turned sculptor, in Seattle. The painted and burnished ceramics sculptural emphasized organic forms. Her influence's were Clayton James, Barbara Hepworth, Jean Arp, and Henry Moore.
