Beecher supported abolitionists throughout America, the Suffragist movement and the temperance movement.

His father Lyman was one of the best known evangelists of the 19th century and his sister Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811-1896) was the author of "Uncle Tom's Cabin," an important abolitionist text and one of the most well known books in American history.
