New York: Payson & Clarke LTD., 1927, first edition. Presentation copy inscribed and dated by Sterner on the half-title page. Inscription reads: To Walter Solinger - most Sincerely - Albert Sterner - Feb '37. 4to; 37 pp. ¼ linen, salmon boards, light-moderately soiled and chipped at tips, frontispiece artist portrait, text interspersed with 64 black and white plates. Good. $225.
In the 1930s, "The art world paid respectful attention, for Artist Sterner…called the ablest figure painter in America…at least one of the ablest and most forceful draftsmen of the nude in the U.S.” Art critics were unkind at last week’s exhibition his portrait heads, still life and landscape works were unexceptionable, but several of his nudes showed that his rapid, unerring draftsmanship has not faded with the years."
