These are wonderful originals. I was lucky enough to acquire an archive of original works by New York and Florida artist Elyssa Benabib. I have not been able to find too many details about the artist on the internet but have included her biography below based upon her resume and other materials that came with the archive. Truthfully, one of the reason I bought the collection was this incredible grouping of monotypes done by the artist in the 1980s. I think the work is really wonderful and you can see the influence of her time in Mexico, Costa Rica, Miami, and New York. In one of the descriptions of her work the artist said, "I always try and put movement in my work. my figures are always moving around their space; jumping, flying, soaring, clinging to the edges of the margins. My shapes seem to be trying to escape the confinement of their format. Sometimes they are happy to float around within their perimeters, and at times they are desperately trying to get out. My use of light colors often gives shapes a sense of whimsical and harmonious activity. They are in constant movement."
There are 12 original monotypes available here sold individually (I actually have 7 others but could not picture them). Each one is a one of a kind work created by the artist. Images measure 13 3/4 x 13 3/4 inches on complete original sheet measuring 20 1/2 x 20 1/2 inches. Each is signed and titled in pencil below the image. Some are dated and some are labeled monotype. Excellent original condition. There might be some very slight handling creases or small spots in an occasional margin but really they are pretty much as printed condition. Ready to be matted and framed or even floated in frames. A grouping of a couple or even a few would really look incredible. I think 4 floated in frames hung 2x2 would really make an incredible presentation. Each one is photographed. If the photograph is still in the listing that work is still available. Purchase multiple works and save. No matter how many you purchase, FREE SHIPPING ANYWHERE IN THE UNITED STATES!!! If you like the artist's work, check my store for the other examples of her work I will be offering.
For those not familiar with the artist, according to the papers I acquired with the archive, the artist was born in New York City in 1937. She studied with Raul Anguiano in Mexico City, 1952-53. She then went on to get her Art Major at Antioch College from 1955-1958. From 1959-1962 she studied at the Institute of Fine Arts in Mexico City and then went to the University of Mexico School of Fine Arts from 1962-1964. She returned to New York and studied at the Art Students League from 1970-1972 and then onto the National Academy of Design in New York with George Nama from 1979-1981. In the early 1980s she had a couple exhibitions at the National Academy of Design as well as some one woman shows at the AIG Gallery and the Maryon Maas Gallery in San Francisco. She continued to work in both New York and Miami and was a member and major contributor to the Art Center of the South Florida until she passed in 1993.
