Namji prestige stools are an important cultural symbol for the Namji people of modern-day Cameroon. They represent status and are used in both practical and ceremonial contexts. Their old-world style with a modern sensibility features hand-carved geometric motifs with incised kaolin pigments, a West African tradition, and are not just decorative but carry cultural significance. The Namji or Dowayo are an animist mountain people renowned for their intricate craftsmanship, particularly in wood carving, which makes their stools highly collectible. The intricate carved patterns add both texture and depth to the stool's design while the curvature of the top creates a comfortable place to sit or rest the neck to protect an elaborate coiffure. Although it comes from traditional African art, its refined shape gives it a contemporary feel.
