This painting is part of the artist’s “War … Read more A postmodern abstract oil painting on board by Detroit artist Brenda Goodman. This painting is part of the artist’s “War Series” from 1971. Small figures, an American flag, and shapes emerge from the abstraction. A nod to Post-Impressionism and Expressionism periods. Provenance: Private estate in Michigan which had several other works by Goodman. In addition, our on-site art appraiser confirmed with Brenda Goodman that it is her work which we have in writing. Dimensions: 12"h x 15.5"w. In very good condition.

Brenda Goodman (1943) was a member of the Cass Corridor Movement, the group of artists from Detroit's Cass Corridor neighborhood whose work responded to the post-industrial decline sweeping the country. It has been noted that "as one of the few women associated with the movement, Goodman’s work is especially notable." She received her BFA from the College for Creative Studies, from which she also received an honorary doctorate in 2017. Goodman’s career began as a member of the Cass Corridor Movement in the 1960s, before moving to New York in 1976. In 2015, a 50-year retrospective of her work was presented at the Center for Creative Studies and Paul Kotula Projects, Michigan. That same year, her work was included in the American Academy of Arts and Letters annual invitational where she received the Award in Art. Her work is included in the collections of the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, PA; the Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit, MI; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, IL; and The Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY, among others.
