Born in in Surakarta in 1943, Aming Prayitno first studied painting at the Indonesian Visual Art Academy and, subsequently, at the Royal Academy of Art in Ghent, Belgium. Among the most prominent Indonesian abstract artists of the 20th century, Prayitno was appointed Professor of Art at Jakarta's Indonesian Art Institute in 1970. He has exhibited internationally with success and is the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards including the prestigious national Penghargaan "Raden Saleh Prize" in 1972. In 1980, he was awarded first prize at the Fourth Indonesian Biennale and, In 1990, the Biennale Award for Indonesian Painting. See less
