Probably English, but it's possible it could be American, it depicts a man and woman in a tense exchange. The subject matter is not known, but it probably depicts a scene from English literature. There are many clues in the scene: the extra shoe, the rose on the floor (ended love?) the book beside the rose, the paper under the man's hand and the very odd book or papers under the leg of the chair in the hall way. Also, the pallid appearance of the lady might imply she is sick or dead.
