A beautiful matching pair of 1880 Bates, Gildea & Walker transferware compotes in the Regent Black pattern on an ivory background. Made in England, a matching pair is a rare find. Makers stamps on the underside of the feet identify them as being made in July 1880.
The intricate pattern features griffins, lyres, acanthus, festoons, arabesques, and geometric borders. It is extensively used in the well and the rim of the bowl, as well as the on the foot of the bowl and on the underside of the lip.
As well as the black & white pattern, the compote is beautifully shaped with a scalloped lip and a pinch waisted pedestal.
This monochromatic pair could add a touch of symmetrical elegance to any color scheme. They would look stunning in a tablescape, on a console table, a buffet, a sideboard, or on matching nighstands. Traditionally used to serve compote, fruits, or desserts, how gorgeous would these look piled high with macaroons?
There is some slight discoloration (about a 10mm length) to the lip of one compote, and to the foot of the other (see photos).
9.5" diameter bowl, 5.25" diameter foot, 4.75" tall.

There is some slight discoloration (about a 10mm length) to the lip of one bowl and the foot of the other (see photos). The pattern is only very slightly worn in a couple of places but, for the most part, is still intense. A really superb pair for their age. less
