wmf= the first printed mark wmf, used from 1880 to 1925 for hollow silver tableware, and until 1930 for export items. In 1880, the company straub & schweizer from geislingen merged with the company a. Ritter & co. From esslingen to form the new company "württembergische metallwarenfabrik" (wmf) in geislingen, with daniel straub as managing director. The choice of the ostrich as the trademark of the new company was determined by the heraldic animal of the straub family, the german word for which is "strauss".
