The shallow oval form, softly irregular rim, and hand-worked surface give it far more character than a polished decorative planter.

The brass has developed a rich, variegated patina with areas of darker oxidation and subtle flashes of verdigris, adding the sort of layered surface that works beautifully in English country and French Provincial interiors. At just over 11 inches wide, it is an especially useful scale for a low arrangement of hydrangeas, herbs, or greenery on a library table, console, kitchen island, or dining table.

It would also be handsome left empty and used simply as a sculptural object among books, ceramics, and other collected pieces.
