Decorate a den, study or office with this antique cow painting. Hand painted in the Netherland and set in the original ornately carved golden frame with intricate leaf and floral designs, the composition depicts a serene pastoral scene featuring three grazing cows and a sheep set in a tranquil landscape under a broad, clear sky. A large tree dominates the right side, its branches stretching into the bright blue horizon. The animals, positioned centrally in the composition, are painted with fine detail, showcasing the artist’s skill in rendering natural forms. The scene is framed by lush, green grass and a winding path in the background. The artwork is signed in the lower right corner by Dutch painter Jan Kobell. The painting in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, and adorns rich colors and exquisite details; a great investment and a wonderful addition for a ranch or a hunting lodge!
Jan Kobell (1778–1814) was a Dutch painter and etcher, part of the notable Kobell family of artists. He was known for his highly detailed depictions of animals, particularly cattle and other pastoral scenes, often set within tranquil landscapes. His works belong to the Dutch tradition of realism, and he is often associated with the landscape and animal painting movement of the 18th century. Kobell was born in Delft, the Netherlands, and came from a family with a strong artistic background. His father, Hendrik Kobell, and his uncle, Willem Kobell, were also painters and etchers. Jan Kobell’s works often reflected a deep understanding of nature, rendered with a calm and harmonious palette, which made him one of the leading animal painters of his time. He studied at the Academy in Antwerp, Belgium, and spent some time in France, where his work gained popularity. Although his life was relatively short, Kobell's influence on the genre of Dutch animal painting was significant. His etchings are also considered exceptional, with an eye for the anatomy and movement of animals. His detailed studies of livestock, particularly cows and sheep, are highly regarded. Listed in the Benezit (see last picture).
