The deacde from 1915 to 1925 saw Picasso urn out a body of work incredible in its scope and many-sidedness. His imagination seemed to be drawing on a variety of sources at once, as he leaped from the soberest classical motifs to colorful restatements of stock cubist themes. But all the while he subtly mixed his styles, emphasizing one perhaps, but castingit into the mold of another. This still life, for example, is wholly classical both in its formal severity and its tendency to re-create the subject in the purest possible terms. Unlike his earlier cubist works, the harmony of this picture depends on color alone, carried to a highly satisfying pitch of expressiveness.
