Decorate a study or a den with this antique hunt setters painting composition. Created in Belgium circa 1890, and set in the original thick carved giltwood frame, this large painting depicts two hunting dogs in a natural setting, alert and focused as if tracking a scent. The composition is dynamic, with one dog positioned slightly behind the other, adding depth to the scene. Schouten's detailed brushwork on the dogs’ fur and the surrounding foliage evokes a sense of movement and vitality. The earthy tones dominate the palette, with rich greens and browns creating a harmonious outdoor atmosphere. The art work is signed on the bottom right corner by the artist, H. Schouten. The painting is in excellent condition with wonderful details and rich colors; the detailed gold leaf frame adds an ornate, classical touch to the artwork, enhancing its pastoral charm. A wonderful addition to a ranch or hunting lodge!
Henry Schouten (1857-1927), was a Belgian artist known for his realistic depictions of animals, rural scenes, and landscapes. His most famous works often feature hunting scenes, cattle, horses, and farm life, rendered with a great sense of detail and movement. Schouten's style can be described as naturalistic, showing a strong influence from 19th-century animal painters. He often focused on capturing the dynamics of animals in their natural environments, displaying a sensitivity to texture and anatomy, particularly in the way he painted the fur, muscle, and movement of the animals. Schouten's work is associated with the Belgian School, and while he exhibited his art internationally, he was particularly appreciated in Europe. He studied at the Academy of Brussels from 1876 to 1881, and was influenced by contemporary European artists of his time, especially Alfred Jacques Verwee, a renowned fellow animal painter. His paintings are sought after by collectors, especially those with an interest in equestrian and animal scenes. Listed in the Benezit (see last picture).
