Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc, and the making of brass candlesticks is centuries old. Georgian-era candlesticks are easily identified by their baluster-shaped stems with a series of knobs as well as gadrooned rims. The distinctive bases are shaped into petal, swirl, or scallop designs. The Georgian period was the period in British history from 1714 to 1835, named after the Hanoverian kings George I, George II, George III, and George IV. This museum-quality pair is a fine example of the Georgian period with its petal base, gradual swelling near the top and bottom, and decorative knobs on the stem. See less
