The Skinny
A quietly beautiful antique English transferware pitcher in the Tintern pattern by Alfred Meakin, dating to around the 1920s. The soft green-gray pastoral scene feels like a page from an old English storybook. The kind of piece that instantly elevates a shelf — or a table.
More Details
This antique transferware pitcher (or jug, if you prefer the English term) was made by Alfred Meakin in the Tintern pattern, produced in England circa 1920.
The color is a muted green-gray — softer than traditional dark green transferware — and depicts a classic English landscape scene: architectural ruins, trees, open sky, and that layered countryside depth that makes these pieces so collectible. Tintern references Tintern Abbey in Wales, a romantic ruin that inspired generations of artists and designers, which gives the pattern real historical resonance. This is true antique English pottery — not reproduction — with all the quiet character that comes from a century of life.
