This vibrant still life by André Cottavoz captures the artist’s distinctive approach, characterized by thick, sculptural applications of paint that blur the lines between representation and abstraction. In Poivrons et Tomates, the textured brushstrokes bring depth and energy to the composition, embodying the unique style that Cottavoz developed as part of the Sanzisme movement, which emerged in Lyon in 1948. The Sanzists, opposed to rigid artistic labels, embraced painting “in the light” without strict technique, a principle reflected in Cottavoz’s work. Oil on board.Signed lower right. Signed, titled, and dated en verso. In original gallery frame. Some wear to frame due to age. Some water damage to back of painting visible in photo.
Born in Saint-Marcellin, France, Cottavoz studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon and became a prominent figure in the Lyon School of New Figuration. His work was recognized internationally, and his association with Japanese art dealer Kiyoshi Tamenaga helped introduce his art to a global audience. He was also awarded the prestigious Fénéon Prize by the University of Paris in 1953.
Deeply influenced by Vincent Van Gogh and Chaim Soutine, Cottavoz’s paintings are known for their bold, tactile surfaces and expressive energy. His works continue to be celebrated in both public and private collections worldwide.
