A highly decorative Maison Jansen dining table, circa 1940, showcasing the Parisian firm’s celebrated blend of classical taste and mid‑20th‑century glamour. Founded in 1880 by Dutch‑born Jean‑Henri Jansen, Maison Jansen became one of the most influential international decorating firms of the 20th century, counted among its clients royalty, aristocracy, and prominent tastemakers across Europe and the Americas. This table was acquired in Buenos Aires, Argentina, underscoring the firm’s extensive international reach and appeal. In keeping with Jansen’s established practice, the piece combines a high‑quality hardwood structure with a painted and patinated surface, the firm frequently using mahogany as the substrate and then applying gray, cream, or white finishes that were sometimes intentionally distressed or aged to evoke 18th‑century French furniture while still feeling glamorous and decorative.
This table features a spectacular verre églomisé (reverse‑gilded) glass top with gold and silver leaf arranged in a luminous, checkerboard‑like field, bordered by contrasting bands that catch and reflect the light. The glass top is mounted on a solid mahogany base that has been expertly painted in a softly distressed white, creating a refined contrast with the richness of the gilded surface.
The base is supported by two masterfully carved lyre‑form pedestals, enriched with classical scroll and foliate motifs, echoing the Louis XVI revival vocabulary for which Maison Jansen is particularly prized. The table is signed “JANSEN” to the base.
With its combination of luxurious materials and unmistakable Jansen sophistication, this circa 1940 dining table is not only a functional centerpiece, but also a distinctive statement piece for connoisseurs of mid‑20th‑century French design.
