A unlikely design, this mid 19th century rug was woven in western China also referred to as Indo Chinese. This rug displays a unique design that incorporates traditional Chinese elements, mostly taken from sild fabrics, dresses and hanging tapestries, that are deeply imbedded in Chinese culture. Symbolizing the Emperor and Empress, the dragon and phoenix were powerful spiritual symbols. This rug employs classic coloring and design to create a statement rich in history and exotic detail.
