The painting depicts … Read more A signed watercolor on paper titled “Return of the Fisherman” by listed American artist Oliver Smith (1918-1994). The painting depicts a cluster of houses by the water, a small boat high and dry due to low tide and a (presumably) returning fisherman facing a figure by the house. The neutral gray sky and calm waters make for a quiet coastal scene. Signed in the lower left. Marked “Return of the Fisherman” and “Nova Scotia” in verso.
Art measures 25.75” x 18.5”, with a gray mat set in a silver frame measuring 31.25” x 25.25”.

“Smith studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and became a well known set designer and stained glass maker. He spent his summers painting the sea at Rockport and remote parts of Maine” - The Evening Independent, Jan 25, 1947.
