On offer is a pair of vintage hand-carved African figures. These serve as a classic example of traditional African post sculptures, closely matching the ancestral stylistic traditions of East African tribal communities such as the Madi or Giryama peoples. Both figures exhibit carved facial features with linear eyes, straight noses, and tightly framed jawlines reminiscent of classic regional ancestral carvings.
One is taller than the other. They are also physically differentiated, forming a complementary male and female pair. The female figure features defined breasts, indicating male and female.
The figures are heavily stylized with long, columnar, post-like lower bodies that preserve the natural shape and texture of the original tree trunk or architectural post. Carved from dense, single logs of native hardwood, these figures typically serve a deep ceremonial and protective function.
The wood demonstrates a weathered, tri-tone texture. The lower portions retain a light, raw wood grain, transitioning to a deeply aged, dark brown, and oil-rubbed patina across the upper torsos and heads. This variation suggests prolonged handling or exposure to elements.
In East and Central African art, columnar figures like these are often referred to as ancestral or memorial post carvings (such as the Kigango or funeral posts). They are erected to honor deceased relatives, house ancestral spirits, or guard sacred spaces. Rather than serving purely as decorative art, they function as dynamic focal points meant to bridge the gap between the living world and the spiritual realm.
The figures are now securely mounted onto modern, square black presentation blocks to display them upright as gallery-ready sculpture artifacts. They are available as a pair only.
Signature/Maker’s mark: Nonexistant. Detailed dimensions: Each sculpture measures 4.25" square at the base, with one at 23.5 inches tall and the other at 25.25 inches tall.
