His two sons Vincent and Oliver followed in their father’s footsteps, embracing his style of painting. It is likely that George Clare’s style was influenced by William Henry Hunt. Clare exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists.This painting features colors more muted than is evident in the photographs. It dates to 1873, as is noted on the nameplate, and is signed in the lower right. The frame is a 20th century wood and gesso reproduction of a style that would have been consistent with the period of the painting.
