These … Read more Set of 4 Chinese export gouaches depicting 4 stages (probably originally a set of 9-12 paintings) of silk production. These gouaches date to the first half of the 19th century. This is a partial set. Gouaches were painted and assembled by theme and sold to westerners in portfolios. Complete sets are scarce, now, and only show up infrequently at auction or are held in private collections. The paper most often used became brittle and flaked, sets were broken up, the Qing dynasty ended and eventually the manufacture of art and porcelain for export diminished.

The framing usually took place after purchase. These frames are most likely intended to depict mulberry leaves as they are the sole diet of silkworms. The mats are gold brocade.

This set of 4 gouaches is in good original condition with rubbing evident in some places, water stains, and minor losses of paint. There is some staining to the brocade mats, and scuffing to some of the frames. Please see photos for detail.
