This " Chagall's Posters : Catalogue Raisonne " very rare vintage 1975 first edition lithograph print Marc Chagall landmark volume hardcover Modern Art book is an incredibly special and unique book to add to your library collection.
The hardcover book with navy blue linen covered boards, embossed cover and spine titles, and dust jacket is published by Crown Publishers Inc. New York. Printed in France in 1975 by Draeger - Paris. The coveted volume features a Catalogue Raisonne survey collection of the poster artworks of the artist Marc Chagall, edited by Charles Sorlier with a compelling accompanied preface essay authored by Jean Adhemar.
Marc Chagall ( 1887 - 1985 ) the French Russian born Jewish artist is known for both his sense of color and fluid aesthetic. His early Modernist artworks explore concepts and themes of spirituality, angelic influences, and the Jewish cultural life human experience. Chagall is commonly regarded as the quintessential preeminent Jewish artist of The Twentieth Century. His mastery of the expressive language of color, and creations in nearly every medium and form of art won him recognition as a leading figure in world Modern Art.
Held in high esteem for generations, art posters have achieved a place of their own among other graphic arts. In addition, posters have historic interest and context in the career and overall oeuvre of the artist Marc Chagall. The book is divided into three parts : The first includes Chagall's own posters engraved by Chagall. The second includes Chagall posters engraved by Charles Sorlier. The third includes posters made from Chagall's earlier paintings, engravings, and sketches, some without Chagall's consent.
An introduction by Jean Adhemar, curator-in-chief of The Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris, texts selected from the most penetrating critics, poems, and a catalogue by Charles Sorlier, Chagall's lithographer who had been working with Chagall since printing the very first graphics, complete this exceptional anthology.
The rare out of print 1st edition hardcover art book measures 9 7/8" W X 12 3/4" H X 1" D, with 162 pages. It features 60 single page full-color lithograph print poster illustrations, and an additional 26 black & white illustrations in smaller format at the end of the book.
It is in excellent " like new " very clean condition with very light signs of handling. It is enclosed in the original cardboard slipcase sleeve. The actual book for sale has never been read.
