Helen Frankenthaler ( 1928 - 2011 ) is an American Abstract Expressionist painter of a liberal Jewish background, and is a major contributor to the history of Postwar Modernist painting. She exhibited her work for over six decades, spanning several generations of Abstract painters while continuing to produce vital and ever changing new art works.
Her work has been the subject of several retrospective exhibitions including The Museum of Modern Art, The Whitney Museum, The Jewish Museum, and The Los Angeles County Museum of Art. She has been exhibited worldwide since the 1950's, and was awarded The National Medal of the Arts in 2001. Artworks by Frankenthaler are included in the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museums.
In 1952, at the age of 23, Frankenthaler created her legendary painting " After Mountains and Sea ". Comprised of translucent washes of thinned-down pigment embedded in unprimed canvas, the large-scale painting was the first in which she used her soak-stained technique. The result evokes a sense of openness and atmospheric space without relying on traditional illusionism.
Published on the occasion of an exhibition organized by The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, this book explores Frankenthaler's artistic maturation, from the groundbreaking achievement of " Mountains and Sea " to the extraordinary paintings created from 1956 through 1959. Beautifully illustrated with full-color reproductions of her luminous art works.
