This dates to the 1800’s and was used to prop open windows to let in fresh air. Lions were popular subjects for window stops and this one is very realistically molded. This window stop is crisply molded with the Rockingham glaze highlighting every detail in the lion’s face and mane. This was glazed with the yellow color of the clay showing through the Rockingham glaze. Because of the heavy use they got, they are almost always damaged. Window stops were molded and the inside is always hollow to make it easier to fire these in a kiln. Window stops are rare examples of early American and English pottery. See less
