The posture is natural, and his serene face bears a faint smile. The eyes are made of glass for added realism. The wood is lacquered and gilded, richly decorated with glass bead inlays; the enlightened one holds his monastic robe (uttarasanga) in his left hand. In his right hand, he holds the myrobalan fruit, an allusion to buddha’s healing power. Provenance: estate of the merchant and collector claude de marteau. Sold with certificate of provenance. H 122 cm x w 55 cm x d 15 cm. Without the square base: h 107 cm. A crack on the panel of the robe and a small chip on the hand (normal wear, period restoration): the price has been adjusted. We have a very limited number of these pieces, all from the same period and provenance. See less
