Rare vintage full-color print of Cubist still life "The Book" (1911) by Juan Gris. Comes from the artist's portfolio published by Albert Skira in Geneva, Switzerland in 1940s. Printed on heavy high-quality paper, on one side. Numbered in the lower right corner. Great quality and excellent condition. Never framed.

Juan Gris (1887-1927) was a Spanish painter whose lucidly composed still lifes are major works of the style called Synthetic Cubism.
The Book is one of the artist's earliest known paintings, this is, significantly enough, a still life whose dominant element is a book, symbol of the mind. The procedures of Analytic Cubism are used with modesty and clarity in equal measure. Objects are broken up into facets, and these are still modeled in chiaroscuro and bound in firm, unbroken contours, which, however, betray lingering traces of 1900 stylization.
